No Other Name, Part 8: Barnabas

Published on october 16th, 2020 | by Steve Perkins

Names are powerful and important.  God allowed Adam to name all the creatures that He Himself had made (Genesis 2:19-20).  There is no other name except that of Jesus by which we can be saved (Acts 4:11-12).  In fact, at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow (Philippians 2:9-11).

In this series of posts, we will look at the names of Classic Christian Rock bands and what those names have to say about God.

Barnabas-Gospel Maniac

Across the span of six years in the '80s, Barnabas released five albums that threatened to blow up speakers and destroy ear drums.  Hard, fast, and at times with a mix of blues, this was a band that took no prisoners musically.  If you thought that Barnabas was the name of one of the members, however, you would be mistaken.

Barnabas was an apostle who, with Paul, traveled the Mediterranean world sharing the good news of Jesus.  His name reminds us of several things.  First, Christian work is best done in company with others.  Yes, we can serve Jesus alone, but we are often more effective when we have someone to share our burdens with, to hold us accountable, and to remind us of our mission when the way grows long.  Second, according to Acts 4:36-37, his name meant "son of encouragement."  One of the most important things we can do as followers of Jesus is encourage other Christian brothers and sisters in their work.

Who has been a Barnabas to you?  For whom can you be a Barnabas?  Remember, you do not live out your calling alone, but in a community of others who have been washed by the same blood as you.
