Flesh and Blood

There is just something about metal music that likes specificity.  Many secular metal bands have titles and lyrics that are grotesquely specific, using biological and medical words and terms to heighten the shock factor of their songs, and while this may disgust some, such a practice actually has a place in Christian rock and metal.

When there was confusion about the identity of Jesus, the Lord turned to His disciples and asked, "but who do you say that I am?"  Peter's response is justifiably famous.  "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  (Matthew 16:15-16, ESV)  God is always clear.  1 Corinthians 14:33 states plainly that He is not a God of confusion, and since we all know that "hard rock and metal are two of the best genres of music for communicating the gosple of Jesus Christ and the Christian life," it stands to reason that we would find brutally clear lyrics in Christian metal.

Enter Bloodgood.  The sixth track on their 1987 album Detonation is "Eat The Flesh," which is as metal-sounding a song title as it gets, and the chorus is, well, see for yourself.

Eat the Flesh, drink the Blood of Christ

The Christian faith is not a vague philosophy.  It is not a disembodied set of principles.  God is not a mental construct, a myth, a wispy otherness.  How do we know?  We know because of the incarnation of Jesus Christ.  In John 1:1 and 14 we read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us...."  Jesus is the embodiment of God.  Right away, at the beginning of the Christian story, we see bold specificity.  God, Who spoke the universe into existence, took on human flesh and became one of us.  But, as commercials like to say, there's more.

Jesus says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.  Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.  For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.  Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, an I in him."  (John 6:53-56, ESV)  God, Who took on human flesh and blood now says that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood if we want to enjoy eternal life with Him.  And, guess what?  There's even more!  When Jesus says that we must feed on His flesh, the Greek word for "feed" is trogein, which literally means to chew or to gnaw on.  Jesus, the Son of God, is telling us to gnaw on His body.

We celebrate this, of course, when we partake of communion (Lord's Supper, Eucharist), but this should be a reality for us every moment of every day.  We should be so close to Jesus that His flesh becomes our flesh and His blood becomes our blood.  Our every thought, word, and action should be the result of His inspiration and His strength.  Remember that is you bang your head to this '80s classic by Bloodgood.
